I love photographing children, families, generations of grandparents, parents and grandchildren, high school seniors, and pregnant women. But I’m sad to say that I did not do a very good job of photographing my own children and family. The other day as I was scanning some of my old photographs, I saw how really bad I was.
Wow… Those images are embarrassing. I placed my subjects in the center of an image with tons of wasted space around them, I cut off body parts, eyes closed, and I had really poor lighting! Thankfully, I think I have learned a thing or two since my kids were little. Actually, I think I have learned a lot in the last eight years about how to capture images that I love for myself and for clients.
Some of the skills that I have learned involve capturing the emotion, the love, and pure joy of my subjects. I realize that with cell phones, (which have a great quality camera), everyone thinks they are a photographer. So, you may ask, “Why should I spend a lot of money to hire someone? Why should I go through all the planning, fuss, and effort?
To start with there is a big difference between a candid shot and an portrait you would like to enlarge and hang on a wall. A few difference are:
Quality is the number one reason. Professional photographers have studied composition, lighting, and posing. It makes a difference.
Just the experience you have during the photo shoot is creating special memories.
Unfortunately, we don't live forever. And when we are gone, if we haven't taken the time to hire a professional photographer, you can't get that time back. That is what I found in my own experience.
A professional photographer is educated to look for the clutter in the background, the tree branch coming out of an ear, the sunlight behind the subject that creates a silhouette or dark faces, etc.
And you will be in the image with the people you love, not behind the camera.
I have learned so much over the 30-years of taking pictures. I have learned the difference between how to take a candid shot and a portrait. I would love it if you would let me capture and preserve this precious time for you. Don't have regrets like I do. My parents and grandparents are gone. I will never have an image of myself and my grandmother. I don't even have an image of just my mother and me, or my father and me. I really wish I did.
