Organizing your digital files
Do you know someone who has every picture they’ve ever taken still on their camera’s card? And when that card is full, that person goes out and buys a new card? Is that person YOU? Do you freak out thinking about what to do with all those images you took?
I understand. The idea of doing something with those pictures can be overwhelming when you don’t know how to do it or what to do. There are so many things to remember. And when you finally figure out how to download those images, you can’t find where they went. GRRRRRR!
Get some coffee, sit back, and read ONE of the many ways you can file your images on the computer.
First, you need to pay attention to the "window" when you are saving the files. Usually, a computer is set up for any picture to go directly into your “PICTURES” folder. Check there first. If you use a Mac, the pictures go into a program called "Photos".
Once in that folder, here is one of the many ways of filing your digital images, (and the way I do it).
01.family (I put numbers before the name because I don’t want it to be in ABC order, and I use “.” rather than “_” because it’s easier.)
Then in each folder I have
I have folders within the original folder.
This system works for me. I generally know what year something happened, so all I need to do is go to the original folder and scroll down until I find what I’m looking for.
You may say, “But I have hundreds of images that will have to be renamed!” I know the feeling, but you have to start somewhere. If you do a little at a time, you will get there! I have a laptop so I sit in front of the TV and work on them.
I hope this helps inspire you to organize your images. And of course, don’t forget to back up your computer. It would be awful if your computer crashes and you loose everything!
If you need any more help, call me. I do help people organize their images, and also tutor people on Mac's.
